October 12 POINTS RACE: RACE NEWSFor those of you who may be looking to do a spot of pre-race practice around the four mile course here are some course notes to help you on your way. The course was tested last Sunday and should provide a great challenge and some close racing. Caution: Unless October 2009 becomes the driest month since records began the Woodland section will be very muddy!
Remember during the first three laps all riders must regroup (i.e. ride slowly allowing everyone to catch up before starting the next section).
Total distance / Time estimate at an easy/leisurely pace are shown in brackets.
1. Lap / Section Start: Sheepscombe Village Hall. Start line is the speed bump at the entrance to the car park. (0.0miles)
2. Turn left, immediately heading up hill.
3. Continue up the hill, bearing left at each of two junctions. Yes the climb is steep, but only for about half a mile. When you reach the 2nd junction you're about half way up. Once you've passed the white railings on the left you're just around the corner from the finish line...so sprint from here!!
4. Section Finish: (King of the Mountains) Finish line is just a few yards short of the T junction with the Slad Road (0.7miles / 15mins)
5. Regroup Section: Looking out for traffic, turn left towards Birdlip. Continue along road until you reach a large lay-by on the left just after a small rise past Bidfield Barn on the right. (1.3miles / 20mins).
6. Section Start: Flat Road Sprint section. Continue along straight road ahead.
7. Section Finish: (Flat Road Sprint) Passing the Foston Ash Pub on the right, turn left finish line is between two stone gate posts separating two adjacent properties. (2.0miles / 24mins)
8. Regroup Section: Go through single gate ahead. Following the blue arrows take the 2nd gate on the left leading down towards the Woodland Downhill section. Go through one final gate before the start of the next section. (2.10miles / 28mins)
9. Section Start: Woodland Downhill. Follow track straight ahead, through woods keeping to the blue arrows all the way. Pass two ponds on your way. A couple of small inclines but mostly mud splattering downhill fun with a couple of hairpins on the way...watch out for those ruts!
10. Section Finish: (Woodland Downhill). Passing between two stone gate posts next to a couple of cottages marks the end of the section. (3.60miles / 36mins)
11. Regroup Section: Follow tarmac road back to car park, turning left at the T Junction near to the Butchers Arms.
12. Lap Finish: Cross over the speed bump to car park entrance (4.1miles / 41mins).
Don't forget of course during the last lap of the race there will be no intermediate sections or regrouping. During the race direction arrows, finish lines and traffic caution signs will be in place. Even so please go carefully at all t junctions. And remember to close gates behind you. Who would want to give their opponents the advantage of an open gate anyway!
